Disciples of Christ

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a Protestant denomination that began in early 19th century Pennsylvania and Kentucky and was founded by Presbyterian ministers. Their beliefs are simple: (1) The Bible, particularly the New Testament, is the sole eccesiastical authority; (2) baptism is by immersion and is performed when the individual is of sufficient age to make the decision to accept Christ, altough, in accepting members, the rite of other churches often is recognized; and (3) each congregation celebrates the Eucharist each Sunday and those baptised, even though a member of another denomination, are welcome to participate.
Local congregations have property rights and the right to appoint their clergy. Women are accepted in all roles.
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is often at the forefront in social action. One of their Four Priorities is becoming a pro-reconciling/anti-racist church. In Texas, in addition to Texas Christian University, the Disciples also sponsor Jarvis Christian College.
